How to get recommended by ChatGPT
AI assistants recommend what their sources agree on. The work is to become one of the products those sources name, in a category the assistant understands.
Run a free scan1. Say exactly what you are
Assistants match products to the category in the question. If your homepage says "the operating system for growth", the model can't tell whether you're a CRM, an analytics tool or an agency.
Put a plain category line in your title tag, H1 and meta description: "Attio is a CRM for startups". Repeat the same phrasing on your directory listings.
2. Find the sources that decide your category
Run a scan and look at the cited sources. In most SaaS categories a few domains dominate: G2 and Capterra, two or three "best X tools" roundups, Reddit threads, and the incumbents' own comparison pages.
That list is your work plan. A mention on a source that is cited in half the answers is worth more than ten new blog posts.
3. Earn presence on those sources
- Review sites: ask active customers for reviews. 10 to 20 recent reviews usually beats 200 old ones.
- Roundups: email the authors of the cited "best X" articles with a short, honest note on who you're best for. Offer a demo account.
- Community: answer real questions in the subreddits and forums that get cited. Disclose that you're the founder.
- Directories: Product Hunt, AlternativeTo and SaaSHub listings are crawled heavily and cited for "alternatives" prompts.
4. Publish the pages buyers' questions need
- "[Competitor] alternatives" pages that list you honestly among others.
- "[You] vs [competitor]" pages with a real comparison table and who each is best for.
- A pricing page with numbers. Answers prefer products whose pricing they can state.
- An FAQ with FAQPage schema and an llms.txt that summarises your product, category and key pages.
5. Measure, then repeat
Track the same set of prompts every week. Expect movement in weeks, not days, as sources are recrawled. Watch share of voice against your top three competitors, not just your own score.
Questions
- How long does it take to get recommended?
- Usually 4 to 12 weeks after the cited sources change. Web-search answers react faster than model training data.
- Does llms.txt guarantee a recommendation?
- No. It helps assistants read your site accurately, but third-party mentions do most of the work.
- Should I write about competitors?
- Yes, honestly. Comparison and alternatives pages are among the most cited page types for buying questions.
