Comparison and alternatives pages that AI answers cite

How to write "X vs Y" and "X alternatives" pages that assistants trust and cite: structure, honesty, tables and schema.

Why these pages matter

"X alternatives" and "X vs Y" are among the most common buying prompts. The pages that answer them directly are retrieved often, and vendors that publish good ones get named alongside the incumbent.

Structure that works

  1. 01One-sentence verdict at the top: who should pick which product.
  2. 02A comparison table with prices, limits and key features, using facts, not adjectives.
  3. 03Sections for "Choose X if…" and "Choose us if…".
  4. 04Migration notes: what switching involves.
  5. 05An FAQ with FAQPage schema.

Honesty is the strategy

Pages that claim you win on everything read as ads and get ignored by readers and by answer synthesis. Say where the competitor is better. It makes the rest of the page credible and quotable.

Alternatives pages

  • List 5 to 8 real alternatives, including yours, with who each is best for.
  • Keep pricing current and date the page.
  • Link to each product's site; don't hide competitors.

Maintenance

Review quarterly. Stale prices are the fastest way to lose trust, and recency affects retrieval for year-stamped prompts.
