Answer engine optimization (AEO): how to get cited in AI answers

Answer engine optimization (AEO) explained: how AI answers pick brands to cite, how AEO relates to GEO and SEO, and a practical playbook to earn mentions with real data from 50 brands.

What answer engine optimization means

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of earning accurate, early mentions in the answers that AI assistants and AI search features write for buyers. When someone asks "best invoicing software for freelancers" or "[market leader] alternatives", the assistant usually names a short list. AEO is the work of becoming one of those names, and of being described the way you want to be described.

You will also see the same work called generative engine optimization (GEO) or AI SEO. The labels differ by community; the outcome is the same. AEO emphasises the answer itself. GEO emphasises the generative engines that write it. On this site we use both, because buyers search for both.

AEO is not a paid placement product. Organic AI answers do not sell slots. Visibility comes from being present in the sources the answer is built from, and from stating your category so clearly that the model can match you to the question.

What our own data shows

We ran unbranded buyer questions ("best [category]", "[competitor] alternatives", "X vs Y") through AI search for 50 software brands. These are the only numbers we quote anywhere on this site, and we quote them as they are.

  • 39 of 50 brands (78%) were never named in any answer to their own category's buyer questions.
  • All 30 brands that had launched in the previous month scored 0.
  • Being known is not enough: an established e-signature tool scored 52/100 and an AI voice tool scored 37/100.
  • In 33 of 50 cases the most cited source was a competitor's own website: its "vs" pages, docs and help centre.
  • Review sites were the most cited source for only 6 of 50 brands.

How an answer engine builds a shortlist

Two consequences matter for AEO. First, consensus across several sources beats a single polished homepage. Second, the pages that shape the answer are frequently not yours. In our set of 50 brands, a competitor's own site was the most cited source in 33 cases. Comparison pages, documentation and help centres owned by rivals often frame the market for everyone else.

  1. 01It interprets the buyer's question: category, audience, constraints such as price or team size.
  2. 02It often runs web search and retrieves a small set of pages it judges relevant.
  3. 03It summarises what those pages agree on, usually naming three to five options with a short reason for each.
  4. 04It may cite or link some of the sources it used, depending on the product.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO

  • SEO aims to rank a URL in a list of links. Success is position and clicks.
  • AEO aims to be named inside a written answer. Success is mention rate, position in the answer and accurate description.
  • GEO is the broader practice of influencing generative engines; AEO is the answer-focused framing of the same work.
  • Shared foundations: crawlable pages, clear titles, structured data, authority and useful content.
  • Where they diverge: AEO depends more on third-party consensus and on page types that answer buying questions directly, such as "vs" and "alternatives" pages.

What to measure for AEO

Judge progress on a fixed set of unbranded buyer prompts, sampled repeatedly. Single screenshots are noise; rates across many prompts are signal.

  • Mention rate: share of answers that name you.
  • Average position: where you appear when named (earlier is usually better).
  • Share of voice: your mentions divided by all brand mentions across the set.
  • Cited sources: domains and pages the answers lean on, ranked by frequency. This list is your work plan.
  • Description accuracy: whether answers call you what you are, or invent a niche you do not serve.

The AEO playbook, in order

  1. 01Baseline. Write 10 to 20 unbranded prompts for your category. Record every brand named, in order, and every source cited. Most new brands will find they are rarely or never named; every brand in our set launched in the previous month scored 0.
  2. 02Category sentence. Write one plain line: "[Brand] is a [category] for [audience]". Put it in your title tag, H1, meta description, about page, directory listings and social bios. Inconsistent category language is a common reason assistants skip you.
  3. 03Own the comparison layer. Publish honest "[You] vs [competitor]" and "[Leader] alternatives" pages with real tables, public prices and a clear "choose X if / choose us if" section. These are among the most retrieved page types for buying questions.
  4. 04Make facts quotable. Public pricing, ungated docs, FAQ sections and a short llms.txt help assistants state accurate details. Products without prices are often skipped when answers compare cost.
  5. 05Earn presence on the sources you cannot publish. Pitch the authors of the roundups that appear in your cited-source list. Ask active customers for recent reviews on the platforms that actually show up. Answer real questions in the communities that get cited, and disclose your role.
  6. 06Technical readability. Add Organization and Product or SoftwareApplication structured data, FAQPage where you have real Q&A, a clean sitemap and canonical URLs. Keep key copy server-rendered so crawlers fetching on demand see it immediately.
  7. 07Re-measure. Re-run the same prompts on a fixed cadence. Expect movement over weeks as cited pages change and are re-crawled, not overnight.

Prompt types that matter most

  • Best-of: "best [category] for [audience]". Broad and competitive; incumbents often dominate.
  • Alternatives: "[market leader] alternatives". Often the easiest entry point for a smaller brand.
  • Head-to-head: "[A] vs [B]". Usually answered from comparison pages, including competitors' own.
  • Constraint: "cheapest [category] for a small team", "[category] that integrates with Slack". Niche products can win here.
  • Local or regional: "best [service] in [city]". Critical for agencies and local businesses; see our Dubai AI SEO audit page for a worked market example.

Mistakes that waste AEO effort

  • Checking only with your own brand name. That measures recall, not discovery.
  • Judging from one answer in one assistant. Outputs vary between runs.
  • Publishing thin "best tools" posts that nobody cites. Focus on the sources already appearing in answers.
  • Self-declared rankings ("we are the #1 X"). Independent sources carry more weight.
  • Treating review sites as the whole game. In our data they were the top cited source for only 6 of 50 brands.
  • Hiding pricing and docs behind logins. Gated content cannot be read or cited.

A 30-day AEO plan

  1. 01Days 1 to 3: run a baseline on 10 to 20 prompts; list cited sources by frequency.
  2. 02Days 4 to 7: lock the category sentence everywhere; add structured data and an llms.txt.
  3. 03Days 8 to 20: ship two comparison pages and one alternatives page; open pricing and docs.
  4. 04Days 15 to 30: pitch the three most cited roundups; request reviews; answer two relevant community threads.
  5. 05Day 30: re-run the same prompts and compare mention rate, position and share of voice.

AEO for agencies and multi-brand teams

Agencies can productise AEO as a fixed-fee audit plus a monthly tracking retainer. Run the same prompt set for each client, report share of voice against the competitors that answers actually name (which may differ from the SEO competitor set), and attach a short list of source wins. White-label audits and client dashboards make the service easier to sell without building the measurement stack from scratch. See GEO for agencies for packaging and pricing ideas.

For multi-product companies, keep one prompt set per product line. Mixing categories in a single score hides which brand is invisible.

A worked example

Suppose you sell scheduling software for sales teams. Your baseline shows you named in 1 of 15 answers, only for "scheduling with round-robin", while two larger tools dominate "best scheduling for sales". The most cited source is the market leader's own alternatives page, followed by one roundup and a sales forum thread.

Your AEO plan for the next month is narrow: an honest "[Leader] alternatives" page that includes you and others, a "[You] vs [Leader]" table with pricing, a pitch to the roundup author with a clear "best for round-robin sales teams" angle, and two helpful replies in the cited forum. You are not trying to win the broadest prompt first; you are trying to own the constraint prompt where you already appear once, then expand.

When AEO matters most

  • Buyers in your category regularly ask AI for recommendations before they shortlist.
  • A few competitors already publish extensive comparison pages and docs.
  • You rank reasonably in classic search but rarely appear in unbranded AI answers.
  • You are newly launched and have little third-party coverage.
  • Branded searches show AI summaries that cite someone else's page about you.

How ShownInAI helps with AEO

A free check runs 10 unbranded buyer prompts for your domain and returns a 0 to 100 score, competitors named instead, cited sources and the first fix. The done-for-you GEO audit is $299 one-time for 20 queries, a competitor comparison and a 30-day fix plan within 48 hours. Tracking plans start at $79 a month if you want the same prompt set re-run on a schedule.

Questions

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
AEO is the practice of earning accurate, early mentions in AI-generated answers to buyer questions. It overlaps with generative engine optimization (GEO) and builds on SEO foundations.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Broadly yes. AEO emphasises the answer; GEO emphasises the generative engines that write it. Both aim at being named when buyers ask AI for options.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO ranks pages in link lists. AEO wins mentions inside written answers. AEO depends more on third-party sources and comparison-style pages, while sharing crawlability and clarity with SEO.
How do I get cited in AI answers?
State your category plainly, publish honest comparison and alternatives pages, make pricing and docs public, earn mentions on the sources answers already cite, and track a fixed unbranded prompt set.
How long does AEO take?
Usually weeks to a few months. Answers that use live web search respond as cited pages change and are re-crawled.
Can I pay to appear in AI answers?
Not in organic answers. There is no paid placement. Visibility comes from being cited by sources the assistant trusts.
What should I measure?
Mention rate, average position, share of voice against named competitors and the sources cited, on a fixed prompt set sampled repeatedly.
