Measuring AI visibility: mention rate, position and share of voice
How to measure AI visibility reliably: prompt sets, sampling, mention rate, average position and competitor share of voice.
Build a prompt set
- Use unbranded prompts: category, use case, alternatives, comparisons.
- Cover the personas you sell to: "for startups", "for agencies", "for enterprise".
- Start with 10 and grow to 25 to 150 as you track more segments.
- Keep the set fixed so trends are comparable.
Core metrics
- Mention rate: share of answers that name you.
- Average position: where you appear when named.
- Share of voice: your mentions divided by all product mentions across the set.
- Cited sources: domains the answers rely on, ranked by frequency.
Sampling and noise
Answers vary between runs. Track weekly or daily, look at multi-week trends, and treat single-run changes of a few points as noise. Alert on bigger moves, such as a competitor overtaking you across several prompts.
Turning metrics into action
- 01Find the cited sources where competitors appear and you don't.
- 02Pick the two or three you can influence this month.
- 03Ship the change, then watch the prompts those sources feed.
